Devotion No. 1
This month I thought I would share with you what I’ve been studying in my own personal devotion. I’ve been studying about my walk with the Lord. I want that walk with Him to become stronger and stronger with each passing day. In able for our walk with God to grow we must abide in Him. John 15:4 says, “Abide in me, and I in you…” Webster says that abide means to continue, last, or endure, to stay, dwell; reside. Jesus is telling us we are to stay in Him, dwell in Him, or endure in Him. To do that we must have consistent fellowship with Him. How do you have fellowship with God??
You stay in His word and obey his word. Colossians 3:16a says, “Let the word of God dwell in you richly in all wisdom…” This is the time when God speaks to us. He teaches us things about Him and lets us grow in wisdom and gives us knowledge about Him.
1 John 2:5 says, “But whoso keepth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected; hereby know we that we are in him.” If we stay in his word, we will have the desire to obey his word. God commands us to obey his word. No we may not be perfect and we may not be able to keep God’s commandments in thought, word, and deed, but we are to try the very best we can to please God with a holy and separated life.
The next thing we are to do is pray. This is our way of communicating with God. This is how we express our hearts to Him. Philippians 4:6, “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” By prayer, we can ask God for what we need, we can thank him for everything, we can pray for others in our prayers, but most of all we can pray and ask for forgiveness of our sins. (Matt.7:7a, “Ask and it shall be given you…” and Matt 21:22, “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.”) God wants to hear from us, He longs for it. The word supplication has the meaning of specifics. In other words we can give specific requests to the LORD, and he will listen to all that we have to say.
By these three things, studying God’s word, obeying God’s word and praying to God is how we keep our fellowship with Him and remain in Him. Do you know what you reap when you abide in God? You get the fruits of the Spirit. If we are abiding in him and doing all the things listed above, we will start producing the fruits of the spirit. In the months to come we will be doing a study on the fruits of the Spirit. I encourage you to begin doing research on these fruits. The scripture text we will be using is found in Galatians 5:22
I pray this was a help to you, as it has been a major help to me. I would love to hear any thoughts that the Lord has shared with you and any comments that you may want to share.
